Who We Are

The Mary Ann Morris Animal Society, Inc. (MAMAS) is an organization dedicated to procuring the humane treatment of animals in our rural area. Only one of the five towns within our county has an animal control officer. We are not able to pick up animals; those who find strays must bring them to us.

Bamberg County Council supplies some of our funding, but we are dependant upon donations from members, volunteers and benefactors to provide the service we do for the community and to provide care for the large number of dogs we receive or are able to accept.

Happy news for HW positive dogs at MAMAS

Being HW positive is a difficult situation for a shelter dog, both because of the medical issues & the high cost of treating a heartworm positive animal. Many times this means a dog never makes it out of a shelter simply because the funds to cover treatment simply cannot be found. :o(

However, the volunteers at MAMAS are delighted to announce some happy news for the heartworm positive dogs at our shelter.

Nicole with The Heartworm Project in West Columbia, SC is sending MAMAS enough of the Immiticide treatment drug to treat dogs weighing up to a collective total of 110 lbs!

The Heartworm Project is a volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that provides medical care for shelter animals in need. Founded in 2004, the original purpose was to treat heartworm positive dogs at local shelters who were scheduled to be euthanized because of their illness. Since inception, they have expanded to include dogs and cats of all ages who need medical intervention that shelters are not capable of providing.

Our second happy (but bittersweet) announcement is the formation of Betty's Fund, a special project within MAMAS dedicated to helping fund treatment for dogs at MAMAS who test HW positive...  including "Hamlet", "Kelsey", & "Blossom"  pictured below  and  "Honey" photographed above.

Betty's Fund is named after Betty Jean Schnurr, mother to MAMAS's rescue coordinator Jean Schnurr. Until her recent, sudden passing Betty shared her daughter's deep love for animals... especially those with special medical needs.

Together with the Schnurr family, MAMAS is asking those with an equally generous heart & love of animals to please make a contribution to Betty's Fund, so that even our HW positive dogs can get the medial treatment they so desperately need to find safe rescues & loving  furever homes. THANK YOU!!!

Jake & Scarlet say THANK YOU!!!

Jake & Scarlet would like to say a big WOOF, WOOF   (translation: thank you)  to Jennifer with Noah's Ark in Okatie, SC.  Jennifer donated $500 to help Jake & Scarlet get their legs amputated.

MAMAS simply did not have the funds to cover the surgery(s) because of all the recent medical expenses & basic vet care costs  incurred for other shelter pups. Noah's Ark generously stepped in to help Jake & Scarlet get the care they so badly needed

Scarlet is still looking for her forever home (or rescue).

Jake is now in a foster-to- adopt home in SC where he will be treated for HW.
